Walcott - People forget how young I am

    By Nick Ames

Theo Walcott says he is happy with his current form but he insists there is plenty more to come from him.

The England international only turned 23 a week ago, but he is already well attuned to the highs and lows of top-flight football - with last month’s 5-2 victory over Spurs providing a perfect example.

On that day, he banished memories of a difficult first half by scoring two goals that sealed a famous win for the Gunners.

“In the first half of that game it wasn’t quite happening for me, but I was still trying - perhaps too hard, really - and I wasn’t hiding,” Walcott told the Official Matchday Programme.

“Although we came back to 2-2, part of me wanted the first half to end because of how things had been going for me. You can tell when people aren’t happy, and it’s not nice. But getting those goals was great for me and for the fans - and hopefully I can show a bit more of that than I have lately.

“I’ve only just turned 23 and people sometimes forget that - players often aren’t breaking into the team until around this age, and I’ve played a lot of games. There’s a lot more to come from me.”

His all-round game is certainly developing, as Arsène Wenger acknowledged after the win against Newcastle, stating that Walcott had produced his best performance for Arsenal in terms of mixing attacking and defensive duties. The player agrees.

“That night I think my performance had everything it needed in terms of defensive and positional play,” he said. “It’s important to remember that as a winger you need to work hard defensively and maintain the right position while getting up and down the pitch.

“I got two assists as well - yes, I’ll take the second one! - and everything seemed to work out.”
